With colored accents and lustrous details, our handcrafted Aerial Wine Glass elegantly evokes an exotic locale when blended with handcrafted Courtly Check® or Trapeze ceramic dinnerware collections. To translate the subtle yet spirited collection envisioned by our designers into functional, beautiful pieces, we worked closely with an artisanal studio in Giza, Egypt (literally in the shadow of the Great Pyramids) where this intricate glass-forming technique has been perfected. The artisans start with hollow glass rods that are flame-heated, and—once the glass is malleable—are mouth-blown, twisted, and manipulated to produce each delicately detailed shape. Frills on the stems are bits of glass that are melted on and crimped with a tool while still hot. To create the raised lines on the stemware bowls and the candle cups, glass rods are melted and dripped onto the blown glass bowls. Considerable skill is required as the glass needs to maintain an evenly hot temperature or it will break when hot melted glass is dripped onto it. After the pieces are formed and cooled, lustres are applied and kiln-fired, creating this elegant, airy collection.
