Lights, camera, action! It’s an Oscar party
January 21, 2020
The Academy Awards—better known as the Oscars—will honor the best of cinema on February 9. With a bit of imagination and our help, you can enjoy the evening and toast the winners in MacKenzie-Childs style.
Set the scene like the they do in Hollywood, starting with paper invitations—in envelopes, please. Then, dress the set with party decorations in gold, plus twinkling white lights, which you probably have on hand from either Christmas or New Year’s Eve.
When guests arrive, greet them with a red-carpet selfie station. Our red carpet is the 3′ × 5′ Courtly Check Red Sisal Rug, and it’s illuminated by the Black Tie Chandelier. To make those selfies even more memorable, ask attendees to dress like movie stars past and present and provide Hollywood-themed selfie props you can make or purchase.
During a lull in the action (otherwise known as obscure awards time), keep guests entertained with a game of Hollywood trivia or Oscar bingo. Be sure to hand out Oscar ballots so everyone can mark their favorites and then follow along as the evening progresses.
Plan a menu that makes a stunning statement and is easy to prepare and serve. We like a buffet-style presentation that has a black-tie theme. Our featured treats are Black Tie Strawberries and Black Tie Cheese & Crackers (recipes follow), served on our Courtly Check Star Plates. You can also include movie theater standbys like popcorn and candy, served in various Courtly Check enamel containers. We also suggest serving Raspberry Champagne Punch, presented in our new Enamel Courtly Check Beverage Hostess, which will be available when our Spring 2020 products debut on January 27.
Finally, bid guests farewell with a MacKenzie-Childs version of an over-the-top Oscar swag bag. Start with our Large Harlequin Cosmetic Bag and add the sparkle of our Silver Studded Candle Holders and a set of MacKenzie-Childs Glow candles. Also, tuck in a mini bottle of bubbly and a personalized chocolate bar.
Now, lights, camera, action! It’s time to party like the stars do!
Black Tie Cheese & Crackers
12 round crackers
12 triangles of Emmenthaler or firm goat cheese
Pitted black olives, cut into tiny triangles and squares for decorating
Put the cheese triangles on the crackers. On the wide end of the triangle, make a bow tie from triangular olive pieces and then arrange tiny squares underneath the bow tie to form buttons. Arrange on a platter and serve.
Black Tie Strawberries
12 large strawberries with stems, rinsed
1 cup white chocolate chips, melted
1 cup dark or semisweet chocolate chips, melted
Line a large baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper. Hold each strawberry by the stem and dip three-quarters into melted white chocolate. Let excess chocolate drip off. Place on prepared baking sheet. Chill a few minutes to let chocolate set.
Dip each berry at an angle in melted dark or semisweet chocolate on both sides for a chocolate jacket. Place on baking sheet to set.
Pipe remaining dark chocolate into buttons and a bowtie on the white chocolate portion of each strawberry. (You can also use a toothpick to add the bow tie and buttons.) Chill until firm.
Raspberry Champagne Punch
1 bottle champagne
1 can frozen limeade concentrate
2 cans lemon-lime soda
3 cups fresh or frozen raspberries
2 limes, thinly sliced
Combine champagne, limeade, and lime soda in container and stir. Add lime slices and frozen raspberries, reserving some to skewer on swizzle sticks.
