Formal Table Settings

Throwing a formal dinner is an art and a science, especially when it comes to formal table settings. There is a science in the way you set up your table, and it becomes an art when you use MacKenzie-Childs kitchenware. We've got beautiful and creative formal table settings that will set your next dinner party apart. Your guests will love the wine glasses, silverware, and plates you dress your table with. Here are some of our favorites and how to set them up!

Formal Table Settings

When it comes to formal table settings, there is always a lot of confusion about where the utensils go! But no worries. The easy rule of thumb is that you set them up to use in an “outside in” manner. Check out this helpful post from Emily Post to see a more in depth explanation.

If you want to buy forks, knives, and spoons for your next dinner party, check out our Check Flatware. Our gorgeous 5-piece set is finely crafted from durable stainless steel and comes with a salad, fork, dinner fork, dinner knife, dinner spoon, and a teaspoon. Each piece is imprinted with our signature Courtly Check pattern on the handle for a subtle yet elegant statement. Or if you prefer to mix your metals, our Gold Check Flatware offers the best of both worlds.

Service Plates/Chargers

The focal point of your formal table settings will be the service plate which is also known as the charger. This large plate is the underplate that will hold the first course of your meal and any subsequent courses until the main entrée is presented. Since this is the visual focal point of your formal table setting, you’ll want to make sure you make a statement with it!

At MacKenzie-Childs, we offer a number of stunning charger plates. Our Courtly Check Enamel Petal Charger/Plate comes in our signature Courtly Check pattern with a scalloped flower-shaped edge and pairs perfectly with our Laguiole Flatware set. If you really want to up the ante, check our our Sweetbriar Charger. The versatile all-white is full of darling details and stunning texture perfect for layering with your other favorite dishes.

What’s a dinner party without a little wine for merriment, and what’s a formal table setting without gorgeous glassware? When setting your table, you’ll want to put your glasses on the right side of the table above the spoons and knives and in the order that they will be used. The water goblet is placed on the left just above the knives. Then as you go left you have your red and/or white wine glass followed by a champagne flute.

When looking for a water glass, our Bearded Iris Water Glass offers an exceptional option. Hand-painted with flowery flourishes that transport you to summers on the farm, this glass welcomes warmth and pleasantry. For a wine glass, we’ve got a number of options including our Tango Wine Glass and our Foxtrot Wine Glass. Our Tango Wine glass pairs perfectly with our Courtly Check patterns and has flourishes of gold that rises to the occasion, while our Foxtrot Wine Glass will add color and brightness to your festivities. We also have champagne flutes to add to your formal table settings!
