Decorate your garden
May 05, 2020
In your home, every room is a blank canvas that you can decorate with color and charm. The same can be true of your garden, where you can add elements that are pretty, practical, and certain to give the space its own personality.
Start, of course, with the design of the garden itself. A few basics apply: If you have the space, create planting beds with curved edges, which are more interesting and inviting than simple straight lines. Vary the selection of flowers by type (perennials and annuals), which will bloom at different times and either bloom each year (perennials) or all season long but just for that year (annuals). Vary, as well, the color and the height of the plants that you pick for the best display. Finally, to learn more about planting containers, see our tips in last week’s blog.
Now, for a bit of garden architecture. There’s nothing more perfect than our Mrs. Powers Garden Gate for creating a memorable entrance (and exit) to and from the garden. Wrought of forged iron in a black-brown finish and decorated with blooming flowers, swooping curlicues, and bells, it features Mrs. Powers in the center, perched on a sunflower swing. by the way, was a local person who has inspired several garden-related products.
We also suggest trellises and stakes because they allow you to grow vertically, which is especially helpful if you’re working with a tighter space. These structures also present the opportunity to add climbing plants such as clematis, black-eyed Susan vine or morning glories. A tuteur, a variation on the trellis, is great in the vegetable garden for growing cherry tomatoes and pole beans.
Another vertical option is our new Garden Obelisk, which comes in three different sizes. Made of powder-coated aluminum with an antiqued whitewash finish, each is beautifully embossed with all sorts of ornamentation, so they’ll look equally as good on the porch or patio.
As for other garden decor, consider the timeless appeal of a verdigris finish on everything from practical watering cans, plant hangers, and citronella candles to just-pretty ornamentation such as our Rabbit Garden Totem. A few more fun items to add ambience and whimsy to the garden or patio include our Courtly Stripe Candle Lanterns, birdhouses and birdfeeders, and our Mrs. Powers Dinner Bell or Frog Dinner Bell.
Finally, be sure to decorate yourself in and out of the garden. Our rain boots, available in two designs in short and tall heights, are the perfect pairing of fashion and function. The shorter Courtly Check Rain Boot is decorated with Courtly Check and Flower Market patterns on the outside and black and white stripes on the inside. The taller Flower Market Rain Boot is decorated with Courtly Stripe and Black Flower Market patterns on the outside and our Courtly Check on the inside. Both versions are made of premium rubber with slip-resistant soles and a moisture-wicking lining. You can wipe dirt away with a damp cloth.
Now aren’t you ready to get out into the great outdoors and get growing? We know we are.
