Patience Brewster LLS Ornament
September 03, 2019
Since 2003, Patience Brewster has created a special ornament that benefits the Holland C. Gregg IV Research Fund at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The fund is named in honor of Patience’s son, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 26 from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Following is a 2015 entry from Patience’s blog that offers more information about her son and the fund. The 2019 LLS Ornament is the Patience Brewster Cupcake the French Bulldog Ornament.
We were clobbered, just like every patient and their family, gets clobbered when there is a cancer diagnosis.
In 2002 our healthy, brilliant 23-year old son came home to discover that his misdiagnosed lumps were, in fact, Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
When initial treatments failed, we contacted The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
I recall huddling in a little pocket of space between booths while at a bustling trade show, trying to carry on a life and death conversation with a man at the LLS who was offering me important information.
I remember pretending to be normal when I was not even close. I was a wild bear desperately trying to save her cub.
One becomes a believer in all things that might lead to health. One becomes vulnerable and insatiably ravenous for vital information, a path back to a world of “normalcy.”
There were more incidents, more urgent searches, and thankfully, an open door and genuinely helpful information at the LLS.
We were not able to cure our boy, to save his beautiful life, but we were able, in many of the darkest hours, to find hope. Hope came in the form of information, knowing what we were up against and innovative treatments. We found clinical trial treatments that worked briefly for Herm.
We are grateful to know that the immunotherapy research that our son and daughter were part of is saving lives now and without horrible side effects. The outlook is hopeful. Today they could save a patient like Herm. They are faster and smarter.
The Holland C. Gregg IV Research Fund is an LLS fund in our son’s name advancing immunotherapy research by Catherine Bollard at Children’s Hospital in D.C. and Baylor University in Austin, Texas under Hellen Hissup. We raise funds through A Dinner for Herm every other year. Everyone is invited and everyone who arrives helps the cause. The event involves sponsors and lots of volunteers so that ALL the proceeds go DIRECTLY to research.
I design an LLS Ornament every year for the purpose of raising money and awareness for this fund.
